Description
Japanese Meiji Satsuma-ware tea service made for the Western market, 19th century, possibly by Makuzu Kozan, the set with teapot, covered sugar, creamer, and two cups and saucers, all profusely and exquisitely painted with miniature scenes filled with people, trees, birds, bridges, houses, and flowers, the undersides with gilt on black marks, in a blue velvet-lined blue lacquer case with remains of gilt merchant stamp, "...Sarolier / Port Said (Egypt)." Teapot: 5.75" H. Creamer interior with original paper label "5641"; wear and large horizontal cracks to top of case; one cup and creamer with repairs to handles.
