Description
17th – 18th century, 258 x 176 cm, Central Anatolia, Konya region
The open blood-red field is dominated by three huge nested hexagons with serrated outlines aligned along the central axis. The weaver dispensed with any additional designs or borders; her intention was to limit her representation to essentials. She has thus succeeded in creating a cult kilim of great intensity and fascinating expressive power. Immediately comparable pieces have not been identified. The missing areas in the hexagons result from complete corrosion of the brown wool sections. – Missing sections, damaged sides, mounted onto canvas.
