First English Edition, and the first translation of the great writer first book that made the world aware of the Gulag, the terrible Soviet labor camp system. Originally printed in Russian in November the preceding year.
Solzhenitsyn: During all the years until 1961, not only was I convinced that I should never see a single line of mine in print in my lifetime, but, also, I scarcely dared allow any of my acquaintances to read anything I had written, because I feared that this would become known.
In 1963, at the age of 42, Solzhenitsyn only work published in the USSP until 1990 appeared in the Soviet Novy Mir Magazine. The work caused immediate sensation in the West and the USSR because of its terrifying realism and being the first work of Soviet literature on a dangerous political subject.
