BOOKS: Dickens Thackeray 1839 Lord Bateman 1st Ed, Charles Dickens and William M. Thackeray [attributed]. The Loving Ballad of Lord Bateman. Illustrated by George Cruikshank. Charles Tilt, London. 1839. 1st edition, 1st issue, with "wine" for "vine" in fifth stanza. In original green cloth wrappers. 4 x 5 inches. 40 pages plus 7 pages of ads at back. Gift inscription on first blank page dated 1839. Housed in a green cloth folder with cloth pull tab, which slides into a green leather slipcase with hubbed spine and gold lettering. Laid in is a page from the Rare Books department of E. P. Dutton, with a description of the volume.

Notes/Literature: Huguette Marcelle Clark (1906-2011) was an heiress and philanthropist, who became well known again late in life as a recluse, living in a hospital for more than 20 years while her mansions remained empty. She was an accomplished artist and musician, having studied under famous portrait painter Tadeusz Styka, and her paintings were exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington in 1925
