Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

Roman, Republican to Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. A cast bronze votive plaque depicting an anchor on one side. Letters are incised to the left of the anchor, but unfortunately they can no longer be read. The back has a simple diamond pattern and the plaque has a heavy border. The anchor looks similar to those found in use on the famous Nemi ships built by the emperor Caligula in the 1st century CE. Probably given as an offering or kept by someone hoping for luck at sea; alternately, it may have been used as a weight. Size: 1.65" W x 1.75" H (4.2 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
