Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of 14 karat gold earrings from the Roman period. Each is made of a delicate gold wire with a tiny round disc of gold wrapped around one side. The work is incredibly delicate, demonstrating the skill of the jeweler who created it. They are hung on modern findings and can be worn today! Size of each ancient earring: 0.3" W (0.8 cm); the earrings with modern findings hang 1" (2.5 cm). Total weight (with modern findings): 1.3 grams.
Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced, a single hole in each, and wore one set of earrings at a time. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit.
Provenance: private Florida, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
