Description
VIRGINIA PAINTED YELLOW PINE AFRICAN-AMERICAN LODGE PEDESTALS, LOT OF TWO, each with applied moldings and original red-painted surface. Circa 1920. 32" to 33 5/8" H.
One in very good condition with minor usage wear and discoloration. The other with heavy wear and losses to painted surface.
Provenance: Purchased directly from the Supreme Lodge of the National Ideal Benefit Society on East Clay Street in Richmond, VA.
Catalogue Note: The National Ideal Benefit Society was an African-American fraternal organization founded in Richmond, Virginia by Alexander Watson Holmes in 1912 to "help people, teach unity, be economic, thrifty, and strive for the protection of its members". At its peak, there were chapters organized across Virginia, in Maryland, and in Washington, DC.
Condition
