Description
ASSORTED CLAY MARBLES, uncounted lot, comprising clay, line crockery, stone, and decorated china marbles.19th century. Various sizes.
Excellent overall condition.
Provenance: The 65-year collection of Barbara Sisson, Charleston, WV.
Catalogue Note: From the notes of Barbara Sisson: "These were made from common clay and were often called 'common marbles' or the shorter term of 'commies'. These were the 'poor boys' marbles. They were sold in the 1800s and early 1900s at ten or fifteen for one cent. Many boys who could not own even one pretty glass, agate, or crockery marble could fill his pockets with these and enjoy just as nice a game of marbles as if he were rich. They are the least attractive of the collectible marbles, but they are the easiest to find."
