Description
Hours of Exercise in the Alps, John Tyndall, 1873 1st ed.
Very hard-to-find book in very collectible condition. Tyndall was a bold explorer who became fascinated by the mountains. The first to ascend the Weissborn in 1861, he maintained a cottage in the Alps where he spent much time observing glaciers. Credited with identifying the essential principles and causes of glacier motion. Known as perhaps the greatest popular teacher of natural philosophy in his generation, he was an earnest and original observer and explorer of nature. In this book he describes in detail several climbing expeditions, including ones that resulted in fatalities. Also gives detailed descriptions of certain glaciers from constant observation plus other accounts of mountain life in the Alps. Pub. 1873 by D. Appleton and Co. (First American edition). Book is clean and straight, with three tips just barely starting to peek through at very ends of tips. Moderate rubbing at spine ends with three small fray-tears at each end including typical bumping in those areas. Spine gilt titling vivid. Hinges tight with front endpaper gutter lightly cracked. Interior very lightly tanned with one page having three very shallow chips. A very presentable, collectible title/edition priced to sell. 473 pages plus ads. 5.5 x 9.
