Description
1724 Dutch Politics Diplomacy Abraham Wicquefort Ambassador of Functions French
Abraham de Wicquefort was a 17th-century Dutch diplomat who was known for being involved in the political negotiations that helped bring an end to the Thirty Years War. At different points in his political tenure he was found guilty-by-association with notorious lawmakers and was imprisoned several times, including his final sentencing which landed him in jail until his death. It was during this sentence that he composed his most famous book – ‘L’Ambassadeur et ses Fonctions.’ While Wicquefort did not write this book as a teaching tool, it has become a staple for learning political diplomacy and the differences in state systems in 17th-century Europe.
