Early 19th century Tibetan thangka depicting Buddha Akshobhya seated on a lotus throne wearing a monk’s robe and surrounded by eight Buddhas. Akshobhya is one of the Five Wisdom Buddhas and represents consciousness as an aspect of reality, he is the embodiment of 'mirror knowledge' - knowledge of what is real and what is illusion, or a mere reflection of actual reality. Akshobhya presides over Abhirati (the Eastern Paradise). Beautifully painted with natural mineral pigments on cotton, original silk mounts. Excellent quality painting, wonderful face with a slight smile, superb detailing of his robe, some expected wear, overall in great condition for a 200 years old devotional object. Comes from old Washington DC collection. Painting size 11.25 x 9.25 inches (29 x 24 cm), mounts 22 x 15 inches (55 x 39 cm).
