Description
**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A tall polychrome depiction of Shou Xin Gong, the Chinese god of wisdom, old age, and longevity, hand-carved from a single piece of lightweight camphor wood. The elder god stands atop an integral oblong platform, dressed in a colorful flowing robe tied with a low-hanging belt, his forward-leaning stature and wispy beard an indication of his unceasing enjoyment of life. His frail corpus is supported by his staff of longevity with a stylized dragon's head on top symbolic of length and persistence. In his left hand rests the peach of immortality, a mythical fruit that is said to bloom only once every 3,000 years. Portrayals of Shou Xin Gong are generally regarded as good fortune for lengthy lives, and effigies of his likeness are typically kept in a meditation garden. Size: 8.5" W x 22" H (21.6 cm x 55.9 cm).
Provenance: private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection, acquired at Indochine Gallery
