Southeast Asia, Golden Triangle (border zone between Thailand, Laos, China, and Burma), late 19th century CE. A tall statue of a gilded Buddha with fine robes and a very tall, pointed ushnisha. He is seated on a multi-tiered red and gold throne with mirrored details on the front. Size: 4.75" L x 7.2" W x 26.75" H (12.1 cm x 18.3 cm x 67.9 cm)
This Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching histhrone. His left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. His robes are gilded, and there is some blue paint marking out his hair. The Golden Triangle area has been the heartland of Buddhism in Southeast Asia for centuries, with religion often going over existing nation-state borders.
