Description
O-Jikishi (large square picture), an illustration from an unidentified episode in "The Tale of the Genji" or "Genji Monogatari", written in the 11th century CE by Murasaki Shikibu, a court lady, Japan's oldest novel. This work is late 17th c. An autumn picture with chrysanthemums and colored leaves, with six Ladies-in-Waiting on a garden veranda, among gilt clouds, rendered in gouache and ink on paper. Housed in a Japanese teak frame with pink silk mat, gilt liners, under glass, OS: 21" x 19 1/2", SS: 13" x 11 3/4". Some old retouching.
