Description
Near East, Sassanian Empire, ca. 500 CE. This is a metallic, shiny piece of hematite with a rounded back and flat base incised with a seated lion and below that a zebu, a taurine animal native to South Asia. The stone has been pierced for suspension and would have been used as a stamp for a seal. The animals chosen probably represent symbols of personal significance to the wearer.
