Description
A fascinating Blue-Glazed Redware Plate from Pennsylvania, possibly by Isaac Stahl, a PA Potter working in the 1930s in the Lehigh Valley near Bethlehem, PA. There is a hand-written sticker on the back indicating that the plate was `dug' in Haycock, PA. While there is little evidence that shows the plate was in the ground for any length of time, Haycock, PA is near Bethlehem, and the glaze matches pictures of blue-glazed redware by Stahl that I have found on-line. The plate is about 8 ¼" in diameter and obviously hand-thrown, given that it is very much `out of round.' It is very heavy and there is a speckling to the glaze which may not come through in the photos. No major condition issues: only a few very small rubbed spots on the edge and a shallow 3/8" x ¼" underedge chip and several firing defects, all on the underside.
