Description
West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fascinating wooden parade figure, carved to resemble a nude woman with her face painted brilliantly white and marked by scarification along the temples. She is painted earthy yellow and white elsewhere and sits atop a pedestal. This style of figure was made to be fastened atop a pole and carried in a procession. Size: 6" W x 17.5" H (15.2 cm x 44.4 cm)
Provenance: the late Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired before 1970

Inactive insect damage, especially around the lower body. Nice remaining pigment. With losses to one leg and the hand that once rested upon it.
