Kunichika, in the 1890´s on the zenith of his fame, is considered to be one of the last great masters of the disappearing art of Ukiyo-e. His artistic activity exclusively focused on - with very few exceptions - Kabuki theater, explicitly on the actor portrait. Gesture and mimic of the actors, their masks and costumes were elements that he spiritedly documented in the most diverse rolls and plays. In the World Expo in Paris in the year 1866 he was represented with 50 Bijin-ga, twenty years later his pictures found world-wide recognition. Today most art historians revere the remarkable power and authentic individuality which characterize Kunichikas ouvre.
