Gryphius excudebat Noctes Atticae is a work that can be dated around 159 - 170 by the Roman writer Aulo Gellio. The title of the work refers to the beginning of its compilation, which took place in Attica during long winter nights. However, most of the work was done ten years later in Rome. Gellio collected in this work extracts from the works of about 275 authors coming from many fields of knowledge such as grammar, rhetoric, ethics, medicine, philosophy, literary criticism, history, sciences, archeology and law and nature. It represents a search for the greatest curiosities of human knowledge of that historical period (end of II century). It is considered to be extremely fragmentary, disorganized in its structure, always in the search for the learned news or the anecdote. Size 4 1/4 by 6 1/4". Binding is firmly attached, with damage to vellum at the back cover. Some foxing. Good condition.
