Well Carved early 20th c. 1920 Chinese shoushan stone figure of a boy riding a water buffalo, with calf. On ornately carved and pierced ebony wood base. Beautiful color and detail. Measures 9.25"x4"x7". Weight is 4 pds 9 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Shoushan (Chinese: Pinyin: shou shan shí) stone carving is an art originating in the Fujian Province of Eastern China. The stones used in carving are also known as agalmatolite and are mined in the Shoushan village in northern Fujian. Use of the stone for carving can be traced back as far as the Southern Dynasties and have long been used to produce handicrafts and then later on in the Ming Dynasty, seals.
