1637 BEAUTIFUL Seneca Roman Philosophy Naturales Questions Comets Rainbows Astronomy Lipse
Seneca was one of the most important 1st-century AD Roman philosophers. After his attempts at retirement from the court of Nero, Seneca composed his greatest work ‘Naturales Quaestiones’ - an encyclopedia on the natural world. In many ways, ‘Naturales’ resembles ‘Naturalis Historia’ by Pliny, however, Seneca wrote this book with themes of morality and ethics throughout dealing not only with scientific matters.
When first completed, roughly 62AD, Seneca had discussed celestial wonders such as rainbows, halos, and meteors; thunder and lightning, water and deluges; the Nile River, ancient theories on hail, snow, and ice; wind, earthquakes, and comets! According to Sellars, this book is an important book on questions of physics and meteorology and is one of the few Roman works of philosophy to deal with scientific matters. (Sellars)
Seneca mentions Nero on multiple occasions in ‘Naturales’ – a Roman ruler who was known for his lack of morals and ethical behavior. Seneca wanted to present his message of morality through the lens of scientific discovery. This book is known to have been a staple in the library of Erasmus of Rotterdam.
This 1637 edition is from the complete works of philosophy by Seneca. It features the commentary and edits of Juste Lipse
