Item Details
Description
War-date Confederate soldier’s Autgraph Letter Signed by W.W. Raffield, Co. D, 4th South Carolina State Line Infantry, 2pp. quarto, Sumter, August 25, 1863, and reads in part: “...All eyes are turned towards Charleston at this time. The Yankees have knocked one side out & are shooting through the other but the fort is not to be given up. They are making sand ballast in the old place & are going to stand to it. The Yankees have been throwing shell in the city Friday night, commenced Sunday night again but what damage has been done there appears to be a certainty that we have two guns that have just run the blockade that are larger than any about Charleston. The balls weight 7 or 8 hundred lbs & hope it will get to the place in time to clear the harbor of Yankee ironclads...” Fine condition.
