Description
New World, Mexico, ca. 20th century CE. A long strand of polychrome glass trade beads and terracotta spindle whorls: thirty-one millefiori beads of varied patterns; thirty small pottery spindle whorls; and one large orange-hued spindle whorl with abstract incised designs. To make millefiori beads, artisans produced glass canes or rods, called murrine, by layering different-colored glass around a core. At this stage, their multicolored patterns are only visible from the cut ends of the cane. The rods are heated in a furnace and stretched until thin, then cut into beads. Size of necklace: 22" L (55.9 cm); size of largest bead: 1.75" L x 1.625" W (4.4 cm x 4.1 cm)
