Description
North America, Native American, Missouri or Illinois, Middle Woodland period, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. An adorable hand-built terracotta pipe in the form of a bird. The base is flat and stable, and the body is quadrilateral in composition. The front of the pipe displays a minimalist bird head, with a conical bead and a pair of drilled circular eyes, and the other end serves as its tail. The middle of the vessel has a receptacle for tobacco or hallucinogenic materials, and a mouthpiece is suggestively located near the animal's posterior. Deep char marks inside the receptacle indicates that this pipe was thoroughly used. Size: 3.25" L (8.3 cm).
