Was an Austrian Expressionist artist whose brilliant, jeweled-toned and patterned paintings came to define the Art Nouveau movement. His portraits, particularly of women such as in The Kiss (1907–1908) and Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907), have an indelible richness created through his use of gold leaf and alternating blocks of color, inspired in part by the study of Byzantine mosaics. An Austrian Symbolist and early founding member of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was commissioned to create several murals and other interior décor in addition to his painting practice of sensuous portraits and landscapes. A consummate draughtsman, later in life he focused on producing intimate, erotic drawings.  many of which were never seen or exhibited until after his death. Born on July 14, 1862 in Vienna, Austria, Klimt studied at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule as an architectural painter and opened his own studio soon after. A fixture in his city’s art scene, and profound influence on the younger artist Egon Schiele, he died February 6, 1918 in Vienna, Austria at the age of 56. Today his paintings and drawings are among the most popular art in the world, found in the collections of the Öosterreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. Klimt broke auction record when Landhaus am Attersee was sold for $28 million and Adele Bloch-Bauer for $135 million in 2003.
