Description
U.S. Asa Waters contract musket, .76 caliber. Formally flintlock converted to percussion. Lock plate marked "U.S. A. Waters Millbury 1829". Walnut stocks, round barrel, metal frame and barrel bands, front sight. Carved initials "CAP" and "CS" either side of butt stock, possible indication of ownership. Barrel length - 40". Overall length - 55". Note: Asa Waters II (1769-1841), son of Asa Waters (1742-1813), lived in Millbury, MA, and, with a brother, built an armory in 1808 to supply firearms for the army under contract with the United States government. A large landowner, he expanded his business interests to banking and the manufacture of scythes, saws, and similar products. He also built in Millbury one of the finest residences of the area. Condition
Converted from flintlock to percussion, nipple is not present. Barrel has been cut down. Ramrod is missing. Rust, pitting to barrel and metal frame. Dings, scratches, hairlines, largest 5", surface of stocks. 2 3/4" area of metal inlay missing, front end of forestock.
