J. Vance Miller (West Virginia/Virginia, 1912-2002) oil on board impressionist landscape painting titled "Pleasant Chore" depicting a figure walking in a field with two cows near a bare tree before a picket fence, an expansive field and cloudy sky in background. Signed lower right. Title, artist's name, and date "Feb. '69" with Palette Art Gallery, Christiansburg, VA label, en verso. Housed in a gilt bronze wooden frame with decorative rope twist carving and beaded rabbet edges. Sight - 8 1/2" H x 11 5/8" W. Framed - 15 3/8" H x 18 3/8" W. American, mid 20th century. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): "James Vance Miller was born in Princeton, West Virginia. In 1944 he discovered plein air painting which eventually became his full time work. He considered his paintings done in the Jefferson National Forest outside Blacksburg, Virginia, to be some of his finest work, especially a two mile stretch of Little Stoney Creek. He exhibited at various galleries throughout the South including at the Fine Arts Museum of Western Virginia, and was Artist in Residence for The Greenbrier Hotel in Lewisburg, West Virginia".
