Description
Very Scarce Circa 1872 Stereoview; Depiction of Charles Hilton, tightrope walker with wood stove on back, crossing Great Falls between Lewiston and Auburn, Massachusetts. Research reveals that this man served in the Civil War and was shot twice in the legs. After the war he worked in the Ara Cushman shoe shop. He talked with his co-workers about his dream to cross the Great Falls, and they pitched in to buy the rope. On July 4th, 1872, Hilton did two performances. One included walking out with a wood stove on his back, then cooking ham and eggs while on the rope. You can read more about Charles Hilton's stunts in an online Sun Journal article entitled, "Charles Hilton - The man who tightrope-walked Great Falls". Period pencil written identification on the reverse, "Hilton walking the tightrope". Photographic stereoview is mounted on slightly curved mount board which is about 7" x 3-1/2". Condition: partial loss on left image in upper right corner. overall some surface soiling, scuffs, and edge wear.
