Chinese Cultural Revolution Madame Mao's Model Operas - Fifty Poster Portfolio

A complete set of 50 photo posters from Madame Mao's original Model Opera's, circa 1965-1976. Complete in the original folder, approx. 10.5x15 inches. Photographs attributed to Zhang Yaxin, who was singled out by Madam Mao to document the eight original productions. The Cultural Revolution was, among other things, an attempt by Chairman Mao Zedong to steer Chinese culture away from capitalism by encouraging violent class struggle . The six model operas (along with two ballets) were sanctioned productions, the performances of which were filmed so they could be shown around the country, which was how the majority of people saw them. And, they were perhaps all that was available as entertainment or arts. Eight revolutionary operas were initially produced. Instead of the emperors, kings, generals, chancellors, maidens, and beauties of the traditional Peking opera, which was banned as feudalistic and bourgeois, they told stories from China's recent revolutionary struggles against foreign and class enemies. They glorified the People's Liberation Army and the bravery of the common people, and showed Mao Zedong as playing the central role in the victory of socialism in China.
