GUSTAV F. BROCK JR 1913-1918 SKETCHBOOK NEW YORK, BRAZIL AND DENMARK: Gustav Frederick Brock (1881–1945, America, Denmark): 1913 – 1918: Documenting a time in Brock’s history when he traveled from Europe to Brazil. The book includes graphite and watercolor sketches both completed and preparatory, most everything is signed by the artist. 13 Sketches for miniature portraits some named, including: 1.) Senator Pinheiro Machado (1851-1915), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1914. 2.) Daughter of Paraguay’s – Several sketches which were completed while sailing to Rio de Janerio, Brazil in 1913 which are labelled ‘Cap Arcana’ Larger images include portraits, landscapes and cityscapes including: 1.) Profile portrait labeled Charlottenlund Slot (Charlottenlund Palace, Denmark) 9/4/15. 2.) Toftegaard, Denmark. 3.) Saunderstown, Roade Island, 09/18/1916. The following scenes are all from New York, New York, 1918 1.) Riverside Drive, New York. 4.) Broadway, New York. 5.) Plaza as seen from N.Y.’s Central Park, 1918. Book: 8” x 5”. Gustav Frederick Brock (1881–1945, America) was a miniature artist and expert on the hand-coloring of motion pictures. He was born in San Francisco and educated in Copenhagen, at the Royal Academy in Dresden and later in Paris with M.A.F. Gorguet. In 1910 he was the sole representative for Denmark at the International Art Exhibition at Buenos Aires. This exhibition included an official portrait of H. M. the Queen of Denmark which was later awarded a silver medal at the Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, 1915 where Brock was again the sole representative for Denmark. In 1920 the French Government acquired Brock’s painting of the 7th Regiment N.Y.H.G. reviewed by Marshall Joffre at Grant’s Tomb. Other noteworthy portraits and miniatures are in the permanent collections of the Musee Nationale de Buenos Aires; a miniature of H. M. King George of Greece in the collection of H. M. Queen Alexandria; The Archbishop of Buenos Aires in the Cathedral of Buenos Aires; the wife of Marechal da Fonseca, President of Brazil, Salon des Artistes Francais 1914, etc. Brock is Officer d’Academie de France and Lieutenant in the Royal Danish Army.” In 1922 he was represented by Ehrich Galleries, New York. He was the son of the Danish painter Gustav Brock (1849–1887).
