Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A utilitarian, buff vessel with a wide, well-defined shoulder, a round, slightly flared foot, a conical neck, a thick mouth, and a ribbed strap handle. The lagynos is an ancient form designed to hold oil (in smaller form) or, as this one, wine. This is a beautiful example of a rare form. Size: 7.7" W x 7.95" H (19.6 cm x 20.2 cm)
