Description
**First Time At Auction**
Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. early 20th century CE. An elaborately-designed, three-part wooden pedestaled betel leaf container with an elongated pedestal with a central bulb and wide foot, a shallow dish, and overhanging shoulders with fin-shaped metal filigree embellishments. An openwork conical metal top sits on the interior of the bowl, and a thin metal disc with vertical leafy adornments rests around the rim of the dish. Wooden areas are gilded, and small mirrored glass beads in clear and green hues emblazon the surface in dazzling colors. The non-gilded wooden surfaces are painted in bright red, and the underside of the dish is painted in a lustrous dark-brown color. Size: 18.25" H (46.4 cm).
