Description
A scarce, magnificently ornamented "true view of the City of Bethlehem [and its surroundings]. . . by a monk of the Strasburg Province of the Franciscan Order who dwelt in the land from 1749-1752." Beneath the baroque title cartouche, God the Father and the Angel Gabriel point to the Infant Jesus, with the Church of the Nativity directly below. In the foreground, the three Magi make their way to the Holy Family, whose manger is nestled between two grand cartouches at the bottom of the image containing a numbered key to the sites and figures in this remarkable scene.
