Description
Grey, Zane. THE LAST OF THE PLAINSMEN. New York: The Outing Publishing Company, 1908. 8vo, printed cloth, gilt lettering front and spine, 314pp plus 4pp ads.
The great storyteller of the "Old West" tells of Charles Jesse "Buffalo" Jones (1844-1919), an adventurer who began as did many others, "harvesting" buffalo to feed the railroad crews. As the dwindling numbers of the mighty beasts became apparent, Buffalo is reported to have broken his rifle over a wagon wheel and vowed to save the beasts. He rounded up all the stragglers he could find and took them to his ranch on the north rim of the Grand Canyon, letting them live out their lives wild, yet protected.
On the first free endpaper, is "With compliments of 'the Last of the Plainsmen'" and signed C.J. Jones. Below this is "And the Author, Zane Grey."
