[Illustrated - Costumes - Middle Ages] Bonnard on Costumes of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Centuries - 200 Hand Colored Engraved Plates
Bonnard, Camille (text). COSTUMES DES XIIIe, XIVe et XVe siècles : extraits des monumens les plus authentiques de peinture et de sculpture. Paris: Treuttel et Würtz, 1829-30. First Edition, 2 Volumes, 12 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches in a 19th C. 1/2 leather and marbled boards bindings which are heavily worn and broken. Complete with 200 beautifully hand-colored engraved plates illustrating noblemen and noblewomen; religious orders; royalty; magistrates; military figures; knights in armour and several with horses, etc., etc. An important work which had a strong influence on artists of the period including Millais, Hunt, and possibly Madox Brown. Rossetti had his own copy. The detail of the coloring is magnificent.
Condition
The bindings are broken and heavily worn with tears and chipping. One has tape repairs along the gutter. The plates do show occasional foxing primarily confined to the margins, but overall they are clean and bright with exceptionally meticulous hand coloring.
