Description
Edger Jean-Baptiste (Haitian/Bainet, b. 1917-1992)
Mambo, circa 1960's
Oil on stone, 3 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 5/8 in.
Provenance: Bob Brictson Estate
Lot Essay: Edger Jean-Baptiste painted stones are rare to the market and very few were made.
EJB is a master painter, alternately capturing the sun or moon's light as either one rises and sets over the many landscapes and buildings of his beloved home city of Bainet. He finds the light at coves, pebble beaches, rivers, waterfalls, after fishing trips, while preparing a meal, in contemplative or restless cemeteries, on a saunter down the street or in a quiet town square. Often times the winds are still, and occasionally there is a sea or night storm that compels him to depict its force.
