Description
A semi-lyre form rosewood veneered clock case with peripheral light string inlay, caddy top and over hung, straight cornice above the square upper door with glazed convex lens, waisted lower portion in lyre-form with two glazed apertures, the upper is trapezoidal to view the gridiron pendulum rod and the lower, circular, to allow viewing the round brass pendulum bob.An iron and steel posted frame movement with brass gears, anchor escapement and powered by two barrel springs of about a week duration and striking the hours on a coiled steel gong. A white enameled dial with Roman hours, closed minute ring, the upper dial signed "Chassing Hger". Chassing was presumably a horologist, clock repairman and likely ran a retail shop, the lower dial, "a St. Etienne", steel Breguet style hands and central seconds pointer. This partially lyre shaped form wall clock is not typical of any known French design except for its connection with the styling first used during the French Empire era of circa 1800-1830 and later. The time-only French regulators were primarily standing floor clocks or desk clocks with brackets for placing against a wall.
