A fantastic Greek red-figure volute krater, Apulia, 4th Century BC, beautifully decorated, the body featuring a male figure within a shrine, a woman holding a bunch of grapes to rt. and a woman, wearing jewelry, with her foot on a step holding a flower and grapes, a scarf above and rosettes in the field. The opposite side depicts a woman seated lt. holding a parasol, richly attired and wearing jewelry, a nude youthful male stands before her holding a situla and a bunch of grapes; scarf and rosettes in field above. The handle sides are adorned with a gorgeous palmette device, a Maeander border below both scenes. The neck of the vessel is adorned the heads of two ladies of fashion facing a krater, both richly bejeweled, a border of rosettes above and vertical tongues below. The opposing neck features a palmette design with a Maeander border above and vertical tongues below. The sides of the rim are adorned with vertical tongues, a band with a wave pattern below with a narrow geometric band beneath that. The handles of the vessel feature the heads of Gorgonians in relief on the sides of the spandrels, the looped lower part of the handles ending in two swan heads in relief, two painted white and the other two black.
