Description
Portrait of the painter Jørgen Roed's daughter Helene Roed, married Nyblom (1843-1926). Oil on canvas. 63×50 cm.
Exhibited: Kungl. Akademien för de fria konsterna, Stockholm, "Utställning av dansk Konst från 1800-talets förra hälft", 1922 no. 170, owned by art dealer Martin Grossell. Kunstforeningen, "Dansk Kunst 1855-1885", 1975 no. 13. Nivaagaards Malerisamling, "Nivaagaard viser Marstrand", 1992 no. 89.
Provenance: According to information on the stretcher given by Poul Marstrand, the painter's son, to Holger Roed, brother of the portrayed. Martin Grosell's collection, his auction, Winkel & Magnussen 114, 1932 no. 96. Engineer Johan Petersens collection, his auction, Winkel & Magnussen 180, 1935 no. 82, reproduced p. 24. Bruun Rasmussen auction 141, 1966 no. 202, reproduced p. 35.
The portrait is a study of Leonora in Ludvig Holberg's comedy: "Det lykkelige skibbrud","(The Happy Shipwreck), Act V. New Carlsberg Glyptotek owns the finished painting with the measurements 90×127 cm. In the memoir from her youth, Helene Roed tells that she was a model for Leonora, and Marstrand arranged her hair to match the hair style of Holberg's time.
