Description
18th Century German Violin in Wooden Case, this beautiful violin has a back carved from two pieces of plainish maple with a faint narrow horizontal curl. The sides are of similar maple. The scroll, with later cheek reinforcements and small inserts adjacent to the A peg, is also of plain maple. The top is two pieces of spruce with mostly fine grains at the center that grow much broader to the flanks. There is a distinctive flame on the lower treble side. The varnish is a deep reddish orange in color and is applied to a dark ground. There is no label present. Appraisal from Philip J. Kass of Havertown, PA is included. There is a Hawkes & Son bow inside the antique natural wood case. Body length: 35.9cm, Upper Bout: 16.5cm, Lower Bout: 20.2cm, Middle Bout: 11.1cm
