Description
A Russian mouthblown blue glass carafe, probably Bakhmetev (or Bakhmeteff Glassworks), circa 1880. Apparently unmarked, but with 16. in enamel on the underside. The peacock blue carafe handpainted with a Cyrillic inscription in Old Slavonic style letters, the inscription taken from a well-known rhyming folk aphorism. The phrase is used to jokingly describe a person who is both clever and a bit of a tippler. The phrase was in common usage in the 19th century and appears in the works of Tolstoy, Leskov, Aksakov, Gorky, and others. 1216-041A. Height 7 5/8 in. (19.4 cm).
Condition
Overall good condition, some wear to gilding, the interior with some haziness.
