Description
John Coffee Hays: Lot of Three Cased Aztec Club of 1847 Medals. Including: 1.) Aztec Club of 1847 Membership Badge. 11.2 grams, 31 mm x 31 mm, suspended from a 1-inch wide blue and white ribbon. Gilt Maltese cross with blue and red enamel accents on the obverse and green and white accents on the reverse. Obverse with "Aztec Club / U.S. Army 1847"; reverse "City of Mexico / Army of Occupation". Housed in a brown leatherette case with tan satin lining. Inside lid marked "The Gorham Co. / Fifth Avenue / New York". 2.) Aztec Club of 1847 50th Anniversary Commemorative Medal. 36 grams, 37 mm in diameter. Suspended via a light blue, white and green ribbon. Supposedly struck from the bronze of captured Mexican cannons. Obverse ""AZTEC CLUB. OCTOBER. A D. 1847. SOCIETAS BELLI"; the reverse "OCTOBER 13, 1847 / OCTOBER 13, 1897". The rim is engraved "COL. JOHN C HAYS TEXAS". The medal is housed in a fitted black leatherette case lined in green satin. The inside top lid is marked in gilt "TIFFANY & CO. / NEW YORK / PARIS LONDON". 3.) Aztec Club of 1847 75th Anniversary Commemorative medallion. Bronze. 32 grams, 36 mm. Obverse reads: "AZTEC CLUB. OCTOBER. A D. 1847. SOCIETAS BELLI"; the reverse "OCTOBER 13, 1847 / OCTOBER 13, 1922". Housed in a fitted black leatherette covered case with satin interior. Inside top of lid marked " FABRIQUE DE ORDRES / A. BACQUEVILLE / PARIS".

Hays' son and namesake was also a member of the Aztec Club by virtue of his father's membership. The commemorative medals were either issued to Hays Sr. posthumously or belonged to Hays Jr.

Condition: 1.) Excellent. 2.) Excellent. 3.) The medal is in excellent condition; the box is worn and the lid is detached.
