Description
Mechanical Banks (Lot of Two): Humpty Dumpty and Tammany Hall. (1) Humpty Dumpty was manufactured by Shepard Hardware Company Buffalo, New York and is patent dated on the bottom 1884. When a coin is placed in the clown's hand and the lever is pressed on his back his eyes roll and the coin slides into his mouth. This cast Iron bank has been overpainted in silver colored paint on his hat, face and hand. A newer screw holds the bottom plate to the body. The bank is still in working order. (2) The Tammany Bank, sometimes called "Boss Tweed", was made by the J. & E. Stevens Company Cromwell, Connecticut in 1875 as a spoof on a corrupt political leader in New York who had been jailed for taking money. If a coin is placed in Boss's hand, its weight causes the hand to lower and deposit the coin into his pocket. Many spotty areas of paint loss overall, bottom intact and all in working order. Good condition.
