Description
DESCRIPTION: Document signed by Daniel Brodhead as Surveyor General, [Philadelphia], January 5, 1798, attesting to the authenticity of a land warrant written on March 4, 1793 for four hundred thirty-two and a quarter acre allowance allotted to Francis McShane (1779-1815). Warrant Number 498 on verso. Includes faded embossed seal. Daniel Brodhead (1736-1809) was an American military and political leader during the American Revolution. In 1776, he was commissioned as a Lt. Col. of the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment. Brodhead took command of the 8th of Penn, lead his troops in the defense of Philadelphia in 1777, and wintered at Valley Forge in 1778. In 1779, George Washington appointed him Brigadier General replacing McIntosh as commander of the Western Department. MEASUREMENTS: At largest point, signed document 7-1/2” x 12-1/2”. Overall with frame 12-1/4” x 16-1/4”. CONDITION: Wear including foxing, toning, and chipping. Document is torn at fold lines. One piece of document missing.
