Description
Attributed to Pierre Stephan (French, 1770-1819) for Derby Porcelain (English, 1750-1785), four quarter 18th century. A bisque figural group sculpture converted to a lamp entitled "Sleeping Cupid" depicting two virgins dressed in stolas preparing to wake Cupid, the God of Love. Sculpture is mounted to a gilt wood base accompanied with shaped linen shade. Overall approximate height 24.75", base width 7". Note: Sleeping Cupid" is alleged to have appeared in the Derby catalog for the first time in 1778 and has been documented in "Derby Porcelain" by John Twitchett, Plate 144.
