Description
Cliff Arquette (American,1905-1974). Beautifully carved and polychrome sculptural wood (with some metal details) military figure depicting an infantryman from the 56th London Division in brown uniform typical of 1939-1945 period. Figure standing at full length and carved in the round on a square base with patch of brown to green textured ground at center, "INFANTRYMAN 56th LONDON DIVISION 1939-45" identifying the work at center. Unsigned. Approximate height 12.6", base 5" x 5". Note: Clifford Charles "Cliff" Arquette worked as an actor or comedian throughout the 20th century. He is best known for his performance as Charley Weaver. In the 1950s, Arquette established Cliff AArquette's Soldiers Museum in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The museum included Arquette's renderings of solders as well as other historical items. In 2014, the museum closed and the contents were sold at auction.
