This is a fine sterling silver ladle with wonderfully detailed and beaded finial of detailed line work, which is a typical trademark of George Sharp silver-work. It also has a hexagonal stalk that leads to the rose gold wash bowl of the ladle. This spoon is a beautiful piece of silver, which has been barely used and is in great condition for its age. It dates to 1860-1870. It has the mark of Sterling Silver and "Patented" on the stalk. George Sharp did not have a makers mark which he used on his pieces, but this ladle is a classic example of his work. In 1864 George Sharp made a patent drawing for his designs that with it shows notes that state: "ornamental design for the ends of handles of spoons, etc." This explains the mark, "Patented" on the stalk. He was a master of finials, and the bulbous decorations at the end of handles. The ladle with handle measures 15 inches and the bowl part is 3 1/2 inches wide. Weights 6 troy ounces. This George Sharp ladle is a wonderful addition to a 19th Century Silver Collection.
