Description
This is a lovely pair of sterling silver master butter knives, made in the Stieff Rose Pattern by the Stieff Company. The Stieff Rose Pattern was patented in 1892, the same year the company was founded. The company was originally known as The Baltimore Sterling Silver Company, but they changed the name to The Stieff Company in 1904. "Stieff Rose" was originally known just as "Rose." Stieff was added to the name when the company merged with Kirk to differentiate between this pattern and a "Rose" pattern already made by Kirk. The Stieff Rose Pattern features a beautiful array of flowers on the handle. These knives are in excellent condition with very crisp detail to the pattern.
These knives each measure 7 1/4" x 1 1/4". Their combined weight is 96.5 grams, or 3.1 Troy ounces. They are each marked "STERLING-STIEFF-REG." on the back of the handle. There are no monograms on either of these knives.
The Stieff Company, located in Baltimore, Maryland, was founded in 1892 and became known as Kirk-Stieff in 1979. It is renowned for the quality and value of its silver products, along with its elegant hand-chasing and Repoussé work. Its most well-known pattern, introduced in 1892, is Maryland or Stieff Rose.
