Description
Meiji Period (1868-1912), signed on underside Kyoto Kinkozan zo, an unusual form of satsuma with sloping sides over a round bottom raised on three feet, the neck of the vase is short and curved with a bottle lip, lavishly decorated with finely painted dragons on one side and three shishi dogs on the reverse side in raised gilt and colored enamels against a tortoise black and brown ground, the neck is decorated with a swirling leaf pattern, two raised gilt bamboo stems flank the shoulder of the vase, a rare vessel form executed in the high skill of the Kinkozan studio.

The Kinkozan family is recognized as the finest of the Meiji period (1868-1912) potters, known for their very meticulous painting and impressive designs.
