Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Guatemala and southern Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 900 CE. A Copador-style bowl with a wide red rim, an orange, undecorated interior, and an exterior decorated with a band of pseudo-glyphs above a series of monkey figures holding red balls. Monkeys are often depicted holding something important or meaningful, and the red ball may symbolize cacao. Size: 7.8" W x 3.45" H (19.8 cm x 8.8 cm)
Simian iconography was very symbolic in the Pre-Columbian world, and the monkey's whimsical antics have always fascinated human beings. Simultaneously interpreted as both a mimic and a contradiction of human culture, the monkey was thought to mediate between man and the supernatural.
Provenance: private D. C. collection, California, USA; D. C. is an Emmy Award winning Hollywood writer and Executive Producer, collected before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
